After finishing a client’s haircut, getting ready to help him to the dinner table. Lutheran Social Services, during my early caregiving years.
It began with Timmy
The moment I saw the need.
During my nursing education, clinical visits introduced me to group homes, assisted living facilities, and other care settings. Later, while working at Lutheran Social Services in the mid-1990s, I met a young man named Timmy.
He used a wheelchair, and his hair often covered his face. One day, I brought my clippers to work and cut his hair. When I showed him a mirror, he smiled.
His parents came to visit, and his mother walked past him before realizing it was her son. She began to cry. The response from his family, and Timmy’s smile when he saw himself, touched my heart.
It helped me understand that transportation, staffing, time, and access to someone with grooming skills could make a basic haircut difficult to arrange. I began serving other homes, then built my own mobile haircutting business.
I wasn’t only cutting hair. I worked with these residents and helped with their daily care. I knew them, and I cared about how they felt. During that time away from nursing school, I fell in love with doing hair.

The experiences came together
Different gifts. One purpose.
Caregiving, technology, grooming, and ministry all became part of the Hairlines vision.
01 / NURSING STUDIES & CAREGIVING
Understanding people’s needs.
My nursing education and hands-on work in group homes helped me understand the daily lives of people with disabilities and the responsibilities of those who care for them. Compassion and dignity became central to the service I wanted to provide.
02 / NETWORK ENGINEERING
Understanding the technology.
While awaiting trial, I enrolled at Westwood College of Technology in Chicago. I went on to earn an associate degree in computer network engineering. That technical foundation helped me understand what it would take to develop an app.
03 / COSMETOLOGY
Putting a gift to work.
I discovered how much I loved doing hair during my time away from nursing school. As a cosmetologist, I brought the practical ability to style and cut hair—and a desire to bring those skills to people who had difficulty reaching a shop.
04 / PASTORAL MINISTRY
Bringing people together.
As a pastor, I serve, encourage, and inspire people. Ministry has taught me the value of relationships and community. It is one reason I see churches as meaningful places to connect with families and caregivers who may need Hairlines.
When I look at these parts of my life together, I see how they merge in Hairlines: understanding the need, understanding the technology, providing the skill, and bringing people together.
The same heart for people, through different seasons of life.

Grooming in assisted living
A familiar setting. A personal connection.
This is me cutting an older woman’s hair in an assisted living facility, then sharing a moment with her afterward. I remember her smile when the haircut was finished.
These are the kinds of moments that keep this work personal to me. A haircut is a practical service, but it is also an opportunity to spend time with someone and help them feel cared for.
Children & families
Serving children on the autism spectrum.
This representative image reflects our commitment to serving children on the autism spectrum and their families.
I welcome conversations with parents and caregivers about their child’s routine, comfort, and past haircut experiences. Those details can help us discuss whether the service and an available professional are a good fit.

A moment of joy, dignity, and compassion
“Pastor Troy in the House!”
During a visit to a nursing home, I had the privilege of cutting the hair of a gentleman living with a spinal injury.
After his haircut, he joyfully declared, “Pastor Troy in the house!”
Moments like these remind me that Hairlines has always been about more than haircuts. It’s about bringing dignity, personal attention, encouragement, and human connection to people who may have difficulty accessing traditional barbershops.
This is the heart behind Hairlines: Making Care More Convenient.
